A study carried out at a university in the Netherlands followed 380 first-year students through their end-of-year exams. The researchers compared students' sleep diaries with their results, and the pattern was striking. Students who slept at least seven hours on the nights before their exams scored, on average, 11 per cent higher than those who slept five hours or fewer — a difference large enough to turn a fail into a comfortable pass.

What surprised the researchers most was that extra studying could not make up for lost sleep. Students who reported studying past midnight before an exam performed worse than students who had studied the same total number of hours but stopped earlier, even when the late-night group had covered more material. The explanation, the researchers suggest, lies in how the brain stores information: memories formed during the day are strengthened and organised during deep sleep, so cutting sleep short interrupts the very process that revision depends on.

The team is careful to point out that their study shows a strong link rather than definite proof, since students who sleep well may differ in other ways — they may be less anxious, for example, or simply better organised.
